Obituary

Reflections and in Loving Memory

Julia Rae Witt, age 93, went to be with her Heavenly Father Tuesday, April 18, 2023.  Julia was born September 26, 1929, in Irvine, Kentucky to Otis Powell and Nanny Wilcox Powell.  Julia went to Irvine High School and stayed connected to many of her friends for years.  She was married on November 15, 1947 to Frank Glendon Witt of Irvine, Kentucky.  Frank and Julia lived in Irvine where they had their first child, Phyllis, born in 1948 and then moved to Richmond, Kentucky in the early 1950’s.  Julia had another child, Gina, born in 1961 in Richmond. They lived there for many years where they raised their family together.

Julia was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Frank Witt; her parents and siblings Sally Wiggins, Ruth Watson, Georgia Powell, Alan Powell, and Jean Reynolds.  Julia was a stay-at-home mother and wife and was a great partner for Frank as he worked as a line-man for Kentucky Utilities for 38 years. She was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Richmond for many years and later became a member of the Rice Station Christian Church in Irvine, Kentucky.  She was a wonderful homemaker and cook. She loved holiday traditions, picnicking, canning and freezing the vegetables that Frank grew. Home life was made very special for her children, with whom she taught and shared these wonderful traditions.   She loved children and loved spending time with her family.  She was looking forward to the upcoming birth of another great grandchild this summer.  Julia had a spunky personality, loved to travel and took her first airplane ride when she was 83 to Arizona to visit her sister. She loved shopping and eating out.  She loved her purses, shoes and clothes to match. Her caregivers nicknamed her “The Queen” as she still carried her purse everywhere she went. They also referred to her as their “Sunshine.”  She was very generous to those she loved and had compassion for others in need.

Survivors include her daughters, Phyllis Ann (Rufus) Brown, and Gina Rae (Jon) McCombs; two grandchildren, Angela Brown (Chris) Boyle and Christopher (Lacee) McCombs; two great grandchildren, Eric Brown and Maison (Reese) Richey; one great-great-granddaughter Charlotte Richey; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Julia has lived in Jonesboro, Georgia with her daughter, Gina for the past six years and made many friends during her time in Georgia. There will be a visitation Wednesday, April 19, 2023 in Jonesboro at Legacy Funeral Home, 8968 Fayetteville Road, Georgia from 5 to 7pm.

A visitation will be at the Lewis Funeral Home, 224 Main Street, Irvine, Kentucky at 1pm prior to the funeral service to be conducted Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 2pm at Lewis Funeral Home with Rev Mark Pearson officiating.  The burial will be at West Irvine Cemetery following the service.

Pallbearers are Christopher McCombs, David Witt, Arthur Witt, Chris Boyle, Zachary Boston, Robby Boston, and Austin Warren.  Honorary pallbearers are Rufus Brown and Jon McCombs.
